Prime Minister Narendra Modi , in his response to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, drew attention to the significant increase in income tax exemptions under his government, highlighting the efforts to alleviate the financial burdens of the middle class.

He pointed out that in 2002, there was no tax on incomes of up to Rs 2 lakh, whereas now, with the recent budget announcement, there is no income tax on earnings up to Rs 12 lakh.  "In 2002, there was no tax on incomes of up to Rs 2 lakh; now there is no income tax on earnings up to Rs 12 lakh," Modi said, highlighting the substantial relief provided to taxpayers.

The Prime Minister also noted that his government has worked diligently to increase savings among the middle class. "We have not only healed the wounds from the past (before his government came to power) but also put bandages," Modi remarked, underscoring the efforts to improve the economic situation of ordinary citizens.

In his speech, Modi also took a swipe at the previous government's handling of direct transfers, recalling the famous remark made by the former Prime Minister, "Mr Clean," who once stated that "if Re 1 leaves Delhi, 15 paise reach the village." Modi contrasted this with his government's approach, saying, “We tried to find a solution. We brought Jana Dhan and an Aadhaar . We sent money directly to people through Direct Benefit Transfer.” Modi revealed that the NDA government has sent a remarkable Rs 40 lakh crore directly into people's accounts through various welfare schemes. "We have sent Rs 40 lakh crore directly into people’s accounts," he added, emphasising the government's commitment to empowering citizens and ensuring financial inclusion.

With this, Modi highlighted his administration’s focus on transparency, direct benefits to citizens, and tax reforms that have helped ease the financial burden on the middle class, signaling a shift towards a more inclusive and efficient economic system.
