Stock Market LIVE: Nifty at 23,350, Sensex down 300 pts

L&T, ONGC, Bharat Electronics, Tata Consumers, and Coal India were the biggest Nifty losers, while Bajaj Finance, M&M, Wipro, Shriram Finance, and Bajaj Finserv were the biggest winners. The BSE smallcap index dropped 1.7% while the midcap index dropped about 1%. The Indian stock markets opened with optimism on an unusual Saturday due to the Union Budget 2025-26 presentation by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Initial gains were overshadowed by market downturns as the session progressed. The BSE Sensex concluded the session marginally down, losing 0.09% to close at 80,429, while the Nifty 50 dropped 0.12% to 24,479.

The Indian rupee closed Monday at 87.19 per dollar, a new record low, down 58 paise from Friday's finish of 86.61.

No Tax Till Rs 12 Lakh

The Union Budget 2025 has introduced significant changes in the income tax regime, making it more beneficial for middle-class taxpayers. The biggest announcement is that individuals earning up to Rs 12 lakh annually will pay zero income tax under the new regime. Asia-Pacific Markets Slide After U.S. Tariffs

Asia-Pacific markets fell Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1.61%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 1.99%, while the Topix lost 1.87%. South Korea’s Kospi slid 2.52%, and the Kosdaq fell 2.79%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index opened 1.23% lower.

Trump Imposes Tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China; Markets React

President Donald Trump on Saturday announced a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, along with a 10% levy on Chinese imports. In response, Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs, while Mexico considered levies on U.S. goods. China planned to challenge the move at the World Trade Organization.

Oil and gasoline futures rose, and the U.S. dollar strengthened.

Traders are now focusing on fourth-quarter earnings, with over 120 S&P 500 companies, including Alphabet, Amazon, Palantir, Walt Disney, and Mondelez, set to report. AI stocks remain under scrutiny.

The January nonfarm payrolls report, expected Friday, is projected to show 175,000 job additions, with unemployment steady at 4.1%.

Markets have seen volatility in recent weeks. In January, the S&P 500 gained 2.7%, the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.6%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average led with a 4.7% jump.

Union Budget 2025-26 Spurs Early Market Optimism, Railway Stocks Plummet After Tax Relief Disappointment

Despite Indian stock markets opening on a rare Saturday for the Union Budget 2025-26, benchmark indices started strong, with the BSE Sensex rising over 100 points to 77,637.01 and the NSE Nifty 50 crossing 23,500. However, as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's speech progressed, enthusiasm faded, and markets slipped into the red despite significant tax reliefs for salaried taxpayers. By the end of the session, the Sensex closed marginally lower at 80,429 (-0.09%), while Nifty 50 dropped to 24,479 (-0.12%). Railway stocks saw a sharp decline, with shares of IRFC, RVNL, IRCTC, Titagarh, RailTel, RITES, Jupiter Wagons, IRCON International, BEML, Texmaco Rail, and Concor tumbling up to 8%.
