The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has clarified that its new message traceability guidelines, effective December 1, will not disrupt OTP-based transactions for essential services such as banking, e-commerce, and money transfers.

Users’ Guidelines

The guidelines aim to combat spam and online fraud by requiring telecom companies to make messages traceable from sender to recipient. This will help identify and block fake OTPs often used by scammers. Financial institutions, banks, and e-commerce platforms must ensure traceability for all their communications, with untraceable messages being blocked.

OTP From December

TRAI extended the initial deadline from October 31 to November 30 to allow telecom providers, including Jio, Airtel, BSNL, and Vodafone, more time to implement the required systems. Warnings are being sent daily to non-compliant entities, ensuring a gradual rollout to minimise disruptions.

No Delays in OTP Delivery

Despite technical complexities in deploying the traceability system, TRAI has assured that the guidelines will not impact the speed or reliability of OTP deliveries, safeguarding seamless transactions for users across telecom networks.
