PAN 2.0: Do I Need To Upgrade My Card? Will Existing PAN Expire?
PAN 2.0 introduces QR-enabled features to modernise taxpayer registration, ensuring enhanced security and streamlined compliance.
PAN 2.0: The government’s newly launched PAN 2.0 initiative brings advanced features like QR code integration to enhance the taxpayer registration system. However, there is no compulsion for individuals to upgrade, as existing PAN cards will remain valid.
Taxpayers can choose to upgrade to the new QR code-enabled version for added security and convenience, but their current PAN cards will continue to remain valid without any changes.
Why PAN 2.0 matters?
The QR code-enabled PAN is part of a Rs 1,435 crore project aimed at modernising the Income Tax Department’s digital infrastructure. The QR code simplifies processes like Know Your Customer (KYC) verification and ensures better data accuracy and security.
For businesses, PAN 2.0 could serve as a universal identifier, potentially replacing the need for multiple numbers like TAN and GSTIN. This would streamline compliance processes and reduce administrative burdens.
Why this initiative?
The PAN 2.0 project was launched to modernise taxpayer registration under the Income Tax Department. Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the project involves an investment of Rs 1,435 crore under its e-governance reforms to introduce advanced Digital PAN/TAN services.
New applicants will automatically receive the upgraded version, while existing cardholders have the option to upgrade at no additional cost. This ensures that taxpayers can benefit from the latest features without any financial burden.
