'Data Breach' At Major Insurance Provider; Second Incident In Two Days - Details

Amid rising cases of cyber fraud, insurance major Niva Bupa has said that their data may have been breached. In an exchange filing, Niva Bupa Health Insurance Company Limited said that the insurer received a communication from an unknown source, who also shared with the company, the data fields of two customers. The said action, the company said, was done with a 'mala-fide' intent.

"We wish to inform that we have received communication(s) from an unknown source, claiming to have access to customer data and has shared limited data fields of 2 (two) customers with us, with a mala fide intent," the insurance company said in a regulatory filing.

As a countermeasure, the company said that they have initiated an investigation in the threat and an information security & impact assessment by independent information security experts.

"We are informing The Exchanges, of this incident, as a matter of good governance. We are committed to taking utmost care of our customers' interests and well-being. This is for information and appropriate dissemination," it further said.

When Unknown Source Shared Data Fields Of Customers Of HDFC Life

The development comes just two days after HDFC Life faced a similar incident wherein an unknown source shared the data fields of their customers. "A detailed investigation is underway in consultation with information security experts to assess the root cause and take remedial action, as necessary," HDFC Life said in an exchange filing. 

According to the government data, the  Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) registered over 23000 cyber security incidents in 2023 alone. Of these, 39 instances were of website hacking, 1185 were virus matters, and over 12,000 were of network scanning and probing.
