Deif behind Oct 7 attack: Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif, a key architect of the October 7, 2023, assault on southern Israel, has been confirmed dead following an Israeli airstrike on July 13. The strike, which occurred in Gaza’s Khan Yunis area, is a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Deif, who was 58, had long evaded capture and was a prominent figure on Israel's list of most wanted individuals. Over a career spanning three decades with Hamas, he became known for his role in orchestrating high-profile attacks against Israel. His death marks a notable setback for Hamas, which has been involved in an extensive conflict with Israel since the October attack.

The Israeli military confirmed Deif's death on Thursday via X post. Deif had survived seven previous killing attempts, including the most recent one in 2021. He was believed to have been directing operations from Gaza's network of tunnels in the aftermath of the October assault.

The October 7 attack, described by Deif as "Al-Aqsa Flood," was a major event in the ongoing hostilities, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the taking of over 250 hostages. Deif's plan for the assault reportedly began in May 2021, influenced by the Israeli raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a flashpoint for religious and political tensions.

Deif’s strategic approach involved deceptive tactics, leading Israel to believe that Hamas was focused on economic development rather than preparing for conflict. His role in the attack, along with other senior Hamas figures, demonstrated his influential position within the group.

Deif's legacy within Hamas includes his role in developing the group's network of tunnels and bomb-making capabilities. Despite his notoriety, he was regarded as a significant figure among some Palestinians, revered for his resilience and commitment to their cause.

The October conflict has resulted in substantial casualties on both sides, with significant international attention and criticism. The International Criminal Court has requested arrest warrants for several key figures, including Deif, in connection with the violence.

Born Mohammad Masri in 1965 in Gaza's Khan Younis Refugee Camp, Deif was known for his early involvement in Hamas during the first Intifada. He was educated in science and had a background in performance arts before rising to prominence within the militant organisation.
