India's K4 Missile Test From INS Arighaat - What Does This Mean?

This test strengthens India's second-strike capability, showcasing its advanced underwater missile technology. The Navy plans further tests to enhance operational readiness. Before the missile's full-range test, the DRDO carried out extensive trials of firing the missile from underwater platforms.

About the K-4 Ballistic Missile

Developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), the K-4 missile is a key asset in India's nuclear triad, meaning ability to strike the enemy from land, water and air. It can carry nuclear payloads and has a range of up to 3,500 km, making it a critical addition to India's defense capabilities.  It also has a strike range of around 750 km.

INS Arighaat: India’s Nuclear Submarine

Inducted in August 2024, INS Arighaat is India’s second Arihant-class submarine. It can carry multiple K-4 missiles and is built with advanced design and engineering. India is also working on expanding its fleet with additional Arihant-class and nuclear attack submarines for long-term defense goals.

According to details shared by PIB, INS Arighaat was constructed using ‘advanced design and manufacturing technology’ following detailed research and development. The vessel uses special materials, complex engineering, and highly skilled workmanship.

Planning Ahead For India's Sub-Surface Capabilities

India is reportedly working on five Arihant-class boats and six nuclear attack submarines to be built in three blocks. The government plans to build both nuclear and conventional boats for its long-term submarine acquisition and capability development plan.
