The newly launched north-bound bridge on Mumbai's Coastal Road, connecting it to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, officially opened to the public on Monday. The bridge is set to ease congestion and reduce travel time.

Not only does it make for smoother transit between Bandra and Marine Drive, but it also offers new connectivity options, with three interchanges allowing access to key locations such as Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, and Lotus Junction.

The bridge will be operational daily from 7 AM to midnight and is expected to cut down travel time between Bandra and Marine Drive to just 10-15 minutes.

The Mumbai Coastal Road project, which was first outlined in the city’s master plan from 1967, began construction in 2018. Originally slated for completion by 2022, the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges. So far, the project has cost approximately Rs 14,000 crore.

The first phase of the Coastal Road spans 10.58 kilometres, stretching from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

It features a modern layout with 4+4 lanes, offering a variety of state-of-the-art infrastructure elements such as elevated roads, twin tunnels, and a bridge on stilts. Key interchanges located near Amarsons Garden, Haji Ali, and Worli Seaface ensure smooth traffic movement.

One of the notable features of the project is the undersea tunnel—India’s first—which opened in March 2024. The twin tunnels, with a diameter of 12.19 meters, run 17 to 20 meters below sea level. They stretch 2.07 kilometres, starting at Girgaon, passing under Girgaon Chowpatty, Malabar Hill, and ending at Priyadarshini Park near Breach Candy.

Earlier phases of the road, including the south-bound arm from Worli to Marine Drive, and the north-bound arm from Marine Drive to Haji Ali, opened in 2024. The newly inaugurated north-bound bridge, which is 827 meters long with 699 meters over the sea, will further enhance connectivity.

The project’s second phase, which extends 20 kilometres between Versova and Dahisar, is currently under construction.
