A post claiming that the Union Cabinet has approved increasing the retirement age of central government employees to 62 is going viral on social media. However, this claim is FALSE.
Government Verified via PIB:
The Government of India has clarified through the Press Information Bureau that no such decision has been made to raise the retirement age to 62. In August 2023, the government also confirmed in the Lok Sabha that there is no proposal under consideration to change the retirement age of central government employees.
What’s In the Matter: Details
The 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) did not recommend increasing the retirement age to 62. Instead, the 5th CPC had earlier recommended raising the retirement age from 58 to 60 and stated that it should not exceed 60, except in special cases like medical and scientific specialists, who may receive an extension up to 62 on a case-by-case basis.
In September 2017, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi , approved increasing the retirement age for doctors (excluding Central Health Services doctors) under various ministries, departments, and autonomous organisations to 65 years. This, however, does not apply to other central government employees.
Thus, the viral claim is inaccurate and misleading as there is no truth in the statement.
