The Union Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw met OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and discussed India's strategy to create the entire IT stack, including GPUs, model, and apps.

The minister posted on X that Altman was willing to collaborate with India on all three.

Vaishnaw also added that the OpenAI CEO appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of democratising technology.

While referring to the Chandrayaan 3 mission, in his conversation with the OpenAI CEO, Vaishnaw told him how India had sent a mission to the moon at a fraction of the cost that many other countries did.

"Why can't we do a model which will be a fraction of the cost that many other countries do? So yes, innovation will bring that cost down," he said, while promising to build a lost-cost AI model.

India is currently working on the applications of AI in healthcare, education, agriculture, weather forecasting, disaster management, transportation, etc, he said.

During the meeting the minister also requested the startup community, which was present in the audience, to come up with unique solutions.

Vaishnaw also shared a clip of his interaction with Altman and the startup group. In the video he said, "We are very soon starting a kind of open competition (for AI)."

The minister noted that AI as a technology has just begun, and the amount of innovations that one would see going ahead is going to be phenomenal, he added.
