Japanese tech giant SoftBank Group and OpenAI have deepened their collaboration by launching SB OpenAI Japan, a 50-50 joint venture aimed at advancing AI adoption in businesses. The announcement was made at the ‘Transforming Business through AI' event in Tokyo, where SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman outlined their vision for the partnership.

Son unveiled Cristal, a new AI service designed to help businesses with planning, marketing, emails, and analyzing old source codes. Cristal will first be integrated into SoftBank’s own companies, including Arm (semiconductors) and PayPay (digital payments).

To support this initiative, SoftBank plans to invest $3 billion annually in AI development.
“This will be super-intelligence for companies, and I’m so excited,” said Son, holding a symbolic blue crystal ball to represent the power of AI in decision-making.

Deep Research: ChatGPT

Altman introduced OpenAI’s latest capability, Deep Research, which allows ChatGPT to perform advanced tasks like analyzing thousands of sources and preparing detailed reports much faster than humans. He confirmed that Deep Research will be available in Japanese, making it more accessible to businesses in Japan.

“This partnership with SoftBank will accelerate our vision for bringing transformative AI to some of the world's most influential companies, starting with Japan,” said Altman.

Global AI Expansion

SoftBank and OpenAI are also involved in Stargate, a $500 billion AI infrastructure project backed by Oracle and supported by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Son revealed that Stargate will expand beyond the U.S. to Japan and other countries, solidifying SoftBank’s role in AI development worldwide.

Competition From DeepSeek

The AI industry is facing fresh competition from Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which recently announced a low-cost yet highly advanced AI system. This signals growing global competition in the AI space, making strategic partnerships like SB OpenAI Japan even more critical.

With SoftBank’s massive investment and OpenAI’s cutting-edge technology, SB OpenAI Japan is set to revolutionize AI adoption in businesses, starting in Japan and expanding globally.
