After years of resisting this feature, Apple has finally introduced the ability to record phone calls on the iPhone with the release of the iOS 18.1 update. This new functionality is available on all iPhone models that are compatible with iOS 18.1. The call recording feature also utilises Apple Intelligence for transcription. The call recording process on iPhones is similar to that on Android phones, which includes an announcement for both parties that the call is being recorded.

Before using this feature, iPhone users need to ensure that their device is running the latest iOS 18.1 update and that it is one of the compatible models:

  • iPhone 16
  • iPhone 16 Plus
  • iPhone 16 Pro
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro

  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)

However, the Apple Intelligence feature is only available on the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 16 Pro series, and iPhone 15 Pro lineup. As a result, the call transcript feature will not function on other iPhone models. Users must also activate Apple Intelligence on their supported devices by setting the device language to US English.

Recording a Call

1. Start a Call: Make or receive a call as usual.

2. Tap the Record Button: During the call, a record button will appear in the top left corner of the screen. Tap it to start recording.

3. Notification: An audible notification will play to inform all participants that the call is being recorded.

4. Real-time Transcription (Optional): If Apple Intelligence is enabled, a real-time transcription of the conversation will appear on the screen.

Accessing Recordings:

1. End the Call: Once the call is over, the recording will be saved to the Voice Notes app.

2. Find the Recording: Open the Voice Notes app and locate the recorded call.
