A “National Manufacturing Mission” to cover small, medium and large industries for furthering “Make in India” was announced by the Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs , Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Union Budget 2025-26. The Finance Minister stated that this mission will provide policy support, execution roadmaps, governance and monitoring framework for central ministries and states.
What will this mission focus on?
The mission focuses on boosting the manufacturing ecosystem by facilitating the growth of industries, increasing production capabilities, and promoting innovation. Accordiomg to the FM, this initiative aims to make India a global manufacturing hub, creating job opportunities, improving exports, and boosting overall economic growth.
What would be key pillars of this mission?
The National Manufacturing Mission will lay emphasis on five focal areas i.e. ease and cost of doing business; future ready workforce for in-demand jobs; a vibrant and dynamic MSME sector; availability of technology; and quality products.
Which are the sectors that will that will benefit and how?
This mission aims to create a diversified and self-sustaining manufacturing sector, providing a robust foundation for India's long-term economic development.Some of the prominent sectors that will benefit from this sector are as follows:
a) Electronics and Semiconductors: Focus on increasing production capabilities of electronics, including mobile devices and semiconductors.
b) Textiles and Apparel: Modernize the textile sector and make it globally competitive.
c) Automobile Manufacturing: Support the automotive industry, including electric vehicles (EVs), with the goal of improving production capacity.
d) Renewable Energy and Clean Tech: Promote sustainable manufacturing practices, with a specific focus on clean and green technologies like solar panels and electric batteries.
e) Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare: Strengthen India’s position as a key player in global pharmaceutical production, including vaccines and medical equipment.
f) Defense Manufacturing: Encourage the production of defense equipment and reduce reliance on imports.
g) Steel and Heavy Industry: Revitalize the heavy industries sector, including steel manufacturing, which plays a critical role in industrial growth.
Any new specific sectors which will be under heavy focus?
The Mission will also support Clean Tech manufacturing and aims to improve domestic value addition and build the ecosystem for solar PV cells, EV batteries, motors and controllers, electrolyzes, wind turbines, very high voltage transmission equipment and grid scale batteries, the Union Finance Minister added.
The government extending support for sectors with high demand such as toys, footwear and leather, with introduction of the National Action Plan for toys and a focus product scheme for footwear and leather sectors expected to generate employment for 22 lakhs people with a turnover of 4 lakh crore and exports of over 1.1 lakh crore.
