Providing a ready access to credit scores can help in easily figuring out a loan applicant's credibility.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget on February 1, 2025 at 11 am in the Parliament of India. Among other measures, she announced 'Grameen Credit Score'.
What Did Sitharaman Say?
"Public Sector Banks will develop ‘Grameen Credit Score’ framework to serve the credit needs of SHG members and people in rural areas", Sitharaman said while presenting the budget.
How Many People Will It Impact?
As per PIB, so far, 10.05 crores of households have been mobilised into 90.87 lakh Self Help Groups.
During 2024-25, 4.93 crore SHG members have been enrolled under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), 6.14 crore under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and 7.92 crore beneficiaries have been covered under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM JAY)/State specific health insurance.
What Are The Possible Benefits?
There are crores of beneficiaries in the SHG groups, and providing a ready access to credit scores can help in easily figuring out a loan applicant's credibility.
It can also help greater financial inclusion by weeding out middlemen.
The announcement will also help the government's SVAMVITA Scheme, wherein property cards are being distributed. This scheme will likely increase the credit demand in rural areas.
Talking about the scheme and its needs for credit, PM Modi had said, "There are more than 6 lakh villages in our country. Nearly half of these villages have been surveyed by drones. After getting legal documents, lakhs of people have taken loans from banks on the basis of their houses and their properties."
