India’s digital economy is a key driver of growth, contributing 11.74 per cent to GDP in 2022-23 and employing 14.67 million workers. With productivity five times higher than other sectors, its share is expected to reach 20 per cent of GVA by 2029-30. Advancements in AI, cloud services, and digital platforms are fueling growth, with India housing 55 per cent of the world’s Global Capability Centers.
In the BFSI sector, over 95 per cent of banking transactions are now digital, and digital platforms are expanding at 30 per cent annually. By 2030, the digital economy will be a key pillar of national progress. Let's us see what are the key components driving the dream of Viksit Bharat.
Unified Payments Interface (UPI):
Launched in 2016, UPI has revolutionized digital payments, accounting for 49 per cent of global real-time transactions in 2023.
- In December 2024, UPI transactions were valued at Rs 23.24 lakh crore, a massive jump from Rs 707.93 crore in December 2016.
- The number of participating banks has grown from 35 in 2016 to 641 in 2024.
- UPI facilitated 16.73 billion transactions in December 2024, up from 1.99 million in December 2016.
- Now operational in 7 countries, including UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius.
Telecom and Internet Expansion: Bridging the Digital Divide
The Telecom and internet connectivity has expanded over the years helping the bridge of digital divide to get better.
Telephone Connectivity
- Total connections: 933 million (2014) → 1188.70 million (2024).
- Urban subscribers: 555.23 million (2014) → 661.36 million (2024).
- Rural subscribers: 377.78 million (2014) → 527.34 million (2024).
Internet & Broadband Growth
Internet connections: 25.15 crore (2014) → 96.96 crore (2024) (285.53 per cent growth).
- Broadband users: 6.1 crore (2014) → 94.92 crore (2024) (1,452 per cent growth).
- 4G connectivity: 615,836 villages now have 4G access.
- 5G rollout: Fastest in the world with 4,62,084 BTS across 779 districts.
- Mobile broadband speed: 1.30 Mbps (2014) → 95.67 Mbps (2024).
Aadhaar : The Backbone of Digital Identity
Since its launch in 2009, Aadhaar has become India’s primary digital identity.
- 136.65 crore Aadhaar cards issued as of March 2023.
- Face authentication crossed 100 crore in January 2025.
- e-KYC transactions: 1470.22 crore (March 2023), up from 0.01 crore in 2014.
DigiLocker: Digital Document Empowerment
- 46.52 crore users as of February 1, 2025.
- 2025.07 lakh sign ups in 2024, up from 9.98 lakh in 2015.
UMANG: Single Platform for e-Governance
Launched in 2017, UMANG provides access to 2,101 government services in 23 languages.
- 7.34 crore users and 516.06 crore transactions in 2024.
- Growth from 166 services in 2017 to 2,101 in 2024.
BharatNet: Rural Digital Connectivity
Launched in 2011, BharatNet aims to connect every Gram Panchayat with high-speed internet.
- 2.14 lakh Gram Panchayats connected as of January 2025.
- 6.92 lakh km of Optical Fibre Cable laid.
- 1.04 lakh WiFi hotspots installed.
ONDC: Transforming Digital Commerce
Launched in 2022, ONDC is creating a level playing field for small businesses in digital commerce.
- 7.64 lakh sellers registered as of January 2025.
- 154.4 million orders processed till December 2024.
- 15.4 million+ orders in December 2024 alone.
BHASHINI: Breaking Language Barriers in Digital India
Launched in 2022, BHASHINI enables digital services in 22+ languages.
- `100 million+ inferences per month.
- 500,000+ mobile app downloads.
- 50+ stakeholders onboarded, including NPCI, RBIH, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha.
Government e-Marketplace (GeM): Digital Procurement Growth
Launched in 2016, GeM facilitates government procurement.
Rs 4.09 lakh crore GMV in FY 2024-25, a 50 per cent YoY growth.
1.6 lakh+ government buyers and 22.5 lakh+ sellers/service providers.
