300 More Trains For Mumbai? Minister Unveils Rs 16000 Crore Plan For Maharashtra
The minister further said that nearly 10 per cent more or around 300 local train services, in addition to 3,000 services operated daily.

The Union Budget 2025 has allocated ₹23,778 crore for railway projects in Maharashtra, one of the highest in history. According to Vaishnaw, this is 20 times more than the allocations made under previous governments.
A major part of this budget will be used to introduce 238 air-conditioned local trains for Mumbai’s suburban network.
“A plan for new design trains on the Mumbai suburban network will be announced soon,” said Vaishnaw, highlighting the government’s focus on improving rail infrastructure in the city.
Mumbai Railway: Details
During a news conference held via video connection from New Delhi on Monday, Vaishnaw stated that railway projects worth Rs 16,400 crore are in various stages of completion for Mumbai on the Central Railway and the Western Railway.
"Almost 300 km of new tracks will be laid in the city," he added.
These trains will be added once ongoing infrastructure projects are completed, reducing wait times and making travel more comfortable for passengers.
"A record allocation of Rs 23,778 crore has been made for railways in Maharashtra in the Union Budget 2025-26, which is 20 times more than the budgetary allocations made under the erstwhile UPA governments," Vaishnaw said.
Maharashtra Railways: Services
In order to lessen crowding and run additional services, he added, the 180-second time difference between two running local trains would be shortened to 150 seconds and then to 120 seconds.
"To ensure smooth cash flow and quick completion of railway projects, Maharashtra has signed a tripartite agreement with the central government and the RBI ," he continued.
The minister further said that nearly 10 per cent more or around 300 local train services, in addition to 3,000 services operated daily, will be introduced in phases following the completion of the ongoing infrastructure projects.
Maharashtra Railways: Reaction To Railway Budget
Despite the massive railway investment, investors reacted negatively to the budget announcement. Shares of railway and infrastructure companies saw a dip on February 3, following a subdued capital expenditure (capex) announcement.
The capital outlay for Indian Railways was kept unchanged at ₹2.52 lakh crore for FY 2025-26, leading to a sell-off in railway-linked stocks. However, an additional ₹10,000 crore has been allocated as extra-budgetary resources for modernization.
