India's digital shopping trends: Men are making waves in the online shopping arena, outspending women by a notable margin, according to a survey by IIM-Ahmedabad. On average, men spend Rs 2,484 on online purchases, which is 36 per cent higher than the Rs 1,830 spent by women.

Men lean towards gadgets

Diving into the specifics, the survey highlights shopping preferences across genders. While 47 per cent of men and 58 per cent of women shop for fashionwear, men show a stronger preference for electronic devices, with 23 per cent making purchases in this category compared to 16 per cent of women.

The study also uncovers intriguing spending patterns across different city tiers. Shoppers from Tier-2 cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, and Kochi are leading the charge, spending 63 per cent more on fashion and 21 per cent more on electronic devices than their counterparts in Tier-1 cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai.

This trend positions Tier-2 city consumers as the highest per capita spenders on fashion and clothing products.

COD leads payment preferences

Notably, consumers in Tier-1 cities spend an average of Rs 1,119, while those in Tier-2, Tier-3, and Tier-4 cities spend Rs 1,870, Rs 1,448, and Rs 2,034 respectively. Despite these variations, 'cash on delivery' remains the preferred payment method, with 87 per cent of shoppers opting for it when buying fashion and clothing items.

These spending habits reflect the median income and purchasing power differences between genders. The researchers also pointed out that value for money is a key driver for online shopping, followed by the ease of the process.

Digital shopping's rapid rise

With average spending remaining around Rs 2,000, low-cost shopping continues to dominate. The pandemic has significantly boosted online shopping since 2020, contributing to these evolving trends, say experts.
